An old shopping center on Binghamton's North Side is to be torn down within the next several months.

The abandoned building at 435 State Street is expected to be demolished next summer using a $534,000 state grant.

The retail complex has been empty since a Big Lots discount store closed when the company moved its Binghamton operation to the Price Chopper Plaza on Glenwood Avenue several years ago.

In 2014, developers announced plans to redevelop the 50,000-square-foot building. They intended to open a full-service grocery store and other businesses at the site. $150,000 in state funding was lined up for the proposed project but it never got off the ground.

The latest redevelopment plan for the site calls for the construction of a building with 36 apartments and a "community residence" with 12 units.

City officials say the current $11 million project would hinges on winning another major state grant.
