$1 Million Vestal Parkway Sidewalk Project Underway
Sidewalk construction work is affecting access to some businesses along Route 434 in Vestal.
The project was announced by the New York State Department of Transportation in April.
It calls for the installation of sidewalks at various spots of the Vestal Parkway between Binghamton University and Main Street.
The project will cost about $1.1 million. State officials say the new sidewalks will make the highway corridor safer for pedestrians coming from bus stops and residential neighborhoods.
Driveway entrances for a few businesses have been temporarily closed at times while the work is underway. Signs are used to designate alternate entrances.
Although sidewalks are being added at eight spots adjacent to the parkway, pedestrians will still have to navigate the shoulders along some portions of Route 434.
Officials haven't said whether there are long-term plans to fill in the gaps that will remain in the sidewalks.
