Bob Joseph/WNBF News [file][/caption]Tons of potatoes are to be gathered from a West Corners field for a program that helps area food banks.

The potatoes are grown as part of an annual project of the Southern Tier Antique Tractor Club.

The club's Jim Baker says volunteers are welcome to pitch in Saturday morning. The field is located at 1300 Union Center Maine Highway, across from the Ann G. McGuiness Elementary School.

A few dozen students from Seton Catholic Central High School in Binghamton are planning to assist in the harvest.

Principal Richard Bucci said the "hands-on" activity will help provide students with a "unique sense of service."

Baker says the need for food donations is great. Some of the potatoes will be given to the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse and others will be donated to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.

Baker says the harvesting will start around 8 a.m. Saturday.
