Vestal Police say the report of an armed robbery at the Target store on the Vestal Parkway December 2 is apparently not all that it was first made out to be.

Officials say they have determined that, rather than the clerk being robbed at knifepoint at around 8 p.m., the employee actually fell victim to a quick change scam and embellished the story.

Police say at no time was a knife ever displayed nor a threat of any weapon made.

The investigation is continuing and a suspect in the change scam is being sought.

Police say a Quick-Change or Fast-Change scam involves the suspect making a small purchase using a big bill, pocketing the change then trying to confuse the cashier by claiming they didn’t’ get the right amount back or continually asks for change for other large bills.  If successful, they typically walk away with double their change.
