The Town of Vestal is moving forward with the expansion of a popular walking trail with the acceptance of a bid for the completion of the second phase of the Rail Trail project.

Procon Contracting of Vestal submitted a successful low bid of 343-thousand dollar to extend the current trail by over one-and-a half miles.  There had been six bids for the work.

Town officials say the extension costs are being covered by state and federal grants with no local match money required, so taxpayers won’t see anything tacked on their bills.

The new portion of trail will run from Castle Gardens to Main Street.

The town has outlined five phases to the renovation and extension of the trail.

The next phase of the project to start in the next few days and is expected to be completed in the Spring.
