The United Health Services board of directors has selected the next leader of the regional health care system.

John Carrigg, the current executive vice president and chief operating officer, is to become president and chief executive officer of UHS on January 1.

Matthew Salanger, who has held the top UHS System posts for a decade, will transition out of the jobs. He will become a part-time senior strategic advisor. He also will remain on the UHS board and its executive committee.

Salanger joined UHS in 1985 and served in various managerial roles prior to becoming CEO in 2007.

In a statement released by UHS, Salanger said he believes "the time is right" for the leadership change.

Carrigg is a Binghamton-area native. At UHS, he has served in several management roles in recent years.

UHS operates several hospitals, including Binghamton General Hospital and Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City. The organization also has various other operating units with a total workforce of more than 6,000.
