Three teenagers are facing attempted burglary charges after they were spotted in a Binghamton South Side neighborhood early Thursday.

Authorities say a city police investigator noticed a group of four people acting suspiciously near James Street and Duane Avenue around 1:20 a.m.

A short time later, the investigator observed the four near the rear of a Vine Street home. The teens fled when they were approached.

Police officers using dogs eventually apprehended three of the four hiding in neighboring yards.

Two 17-year-old Binghamton boys were charged with attempted burglary and trespass. The third boy, who is 15, is to appear in family court on an attempted burglary count.

Police say they also recovered items that could have been used as burglary tools.

Detectives have been investigating a series of home burglaries and car larcenies on the South Side in recent weeks.
