Its estimated some 35 million people in the U.S. waited until the deadline to file their federal tax returns by the midnight, April 15 deadline.

While some procrastinators rushed to finish their income tax filings, other people are pushing for better income for low-wage earners.

Rallies were scheduled for tax day across the country, including in front of a Main Street, Binghamton fast food restaurant to push for a $15 an hour wage and respect for workers rights.

The local demonstration is one of several actions in cities around the country for a national day of action in the “Fight for $15.”

In Binghamton, labor and community groups as well as some concerned citizens were expected to gather with speakers pointing to the role of low wages in contributing to child poverty.

Organizers say the minimum wage earners can’t afford basic necessities for their families and many turn to public assistance. That, in turn puts a financial burden on taxpayers.

Meanwhile, New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has reported taxable income of $327,516.

His overall income was reported up about $30,000 from last year, mainly due to higher capital gains.

New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s tax filing shows he made $146, 900 in his state salary and $11, 452 in dividend income.
