The storms that races through the Twin Tiers late Thursday afternoon created challenges for drivers as some streets and underpasses were impassible.

NYSEG crews were working to restore power in the Binghamton area and elsewhere across upstate New York.

According to the utility, more than 24,000 customers were without electricity at one point because of the violent storms. The company said nearly 1,000 personnel responded to some of the hardest-hit areas.

NYSEG requested assistance from neighboring companies and contractors.

Flooding caused problems at the Susquehanna County communications center in Montrose. After water entered the building, dispatchers handled emergency calls using a temporary mobile unit.

Gusty winds took down trees and limbs in some parts of the Twin Tiers.
