That carjacking actually happened minutes after Hamilton approached a man in the Wegman’s supermarket parking lot directly across Harry L. Drive from the mall and tried to steal his car.

Johnson City Police said after the suspect failed to forcibly take the Wegman shopper’s vehicle, he ran across the busy, multi-lane section of Harry L. Drive to the mall parking lot where he encountered the hapless woman getting into her vehicle.

Village Police accused Hamilton of pulling the woman from her car and spraying her with capsaicin and taking off in her car on that Sunday afternoon.

Police had been responding to the initial attempted carjacking report at Wegmans when they were directed across the road to the mall parking lot.

The stolen vehicle was found on Underwood Road in Vestal. Police say Hamilton attempted to escape from custody as they were placing him under arrest.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office reports Hamilton had a previous conviction for burglary in 2016.

As part of the sentence handed down in Broome County Court for the latest incident, Hamilton is to serve five years post-release supervision after he gets out of prison.
