A scam attempting to part utility customers from their money using threats of electricity being turned off is surfacing locally again.

Officials with New York State Electric and Gas and Rochester Gas and Electric are warning customers to beware of Green Dot MoneyPak Card Scams.

NYSEG and RG&E say callers tell the would-be victim they represent the utility and are calling about billing matters.  Some customers have been warned that to avoid having their service shut off they should buy a Green Dot MoneyPak Card and contact the caller with the card information.

NYSEG and RG&E say they will not call a customer for payment if an account is in good standing and will never ask a customer to purchase a debit card to make a payment.

Customers who need to make an urgent payment should call the utility directly and anyone who has a question about a call for an overdue payment should also call the utility directly.
