A downtown Binghamton pizza restaurant remains closed weeks after a neighboring fire-damaged building was demolished.

Nirchi's Pizza on Water Street was shut down for about a week after the April 30 blaze at the Ellis Brothers furniture building.

Although the restaurant reopened following the fire, it was forced to close again after engineers determined the Ellis structure had to be torn down.

Take-out and delivery orders for the Nirchi's downtown location are being directed to the shop on Main Street on the West Side.

Gary Hutchings, the manager of that site, says the operators of the Water Street restaurant have been given no indication when that location can reopen.

Hutchings says it appears efforts to get the downtown site running again are "at a standstill."

David Lebous, the owner of the Water Street property, could not be reached for information on what needs to be done before the building can return to use.
