The bust of Columbus and a stone monument at the Broome County Courthouse were vandalized a month ago.

Red paint was sprayed on the statue and used to scrawl the word “MURDERER” on the monument on Collier Street.

On this Columbus Day, flowers were placed at the base of the monument and people gathered downtown for the annual parade honoring Columbus.

Binghamton police detective Captain Jack Collins said investigators have no active leads to pursue in the vandalism case. He said it appears the act likely was the work of more than one person.

The damage was discovered on September 9. Broome County maintenance workers used a pressure washer and cleaning agents to remove most of the paint from the statue and the monument.

People with information about the vandalism may contact the Binghamton police detective division at 607.772.7080.
