People who are newly dealing with the challenges of vision impairment or total blindness will get help from peers in dealing with such things as accessing public transportation, housing and medical issues.

Speaking on the September 27 edition of the weekly local public affairs program, Southern Tier Close Up, Richared Farruggio talks about the formation of the Support Group for People with Visual Disabilities.

The group will gather at the Southern Tier Independence Center at 135 East Frederick Street in Binghamton Thursday, October 9 from 3-4 p.m.

Farruggio says cooking, cleaning, dialing a phone and even identifying money can be hard for people who are newly diagnosed with vision loss.

Farruggio says the group will give people information about tried and true solutions to many of those daily problems.

Farruggio ran a similar, highly successful support group in Ithaca.

In addition to patients, family members are also invited to sit in the group.

Information on the support group or other STIC programs can be found at www.stic-cil.org or by calling (607) 724-2111.
