Construction at the site of the future Dollar General store in Apalachin began last week. The location is on the south side of Route 434, just west of Exit 66 off Route 17.

The new business will be about one-half mile from a Family Dollar store that opened several years ago.

Town of Owego officials expect the Dollar General store will open early this summer.

Dollar General and chains like it are growing at a time most big national retailers are reducing operations and closing many stores.

Dollar General already operates several stores in Broome and Tioga counties. A developer recently received a zoning variance for a Dollar General project on West Sheedy Road in Vestal.

In February, the Vestal Zoning Board of Appeals gave its approval for a store to be built with fewer parking spaces than required under town regulations.
