The life of Ali Mazrui will be celebrated during a Binghamton University memorial program.

Mazrui was a professor and political scientist. He died at his Vestal home on October 12. He was 81.

The memorial event will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday in Casadesus Music Hall on the Binghamton University Vestal campus.

Mazrui was born in Kenya in 1933. He joined the Binghamton University faculty in 1989, where he was the Albert Schweitzer Professor in the Humanities.

Mazrui wrote about African and Islamic studies. He was honored last year during the convention of the New York African Studies Association, which was held in Binghamton.

Speakers from universities across the United States are scheduled to participate in Saturday's program.
