Detectives are investigating the death of a Town of Maine man whose remains were found in a wooded area.

Authorities say the body was discovered Wednesday morning by a man who had been walking along Nanticoke Creek.

Broome County sheriff's deputies were sent to the area around 9:20 a.m. The remains were located between the creek and Edgewood Road.

Captain Kathleen Newcomb said investigators have identified the body as that of 52-year-old Michael Petro of Route 26.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed Thursday at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

Newcomb said Petro was last seen alive Tuesday evening. He had not been reported missing.

Petro's employer said he did not show up for work Wednesday morning. He had worked on Tuesday.

People with information about the case may call the sheriff's office tip line at 607.778.1196.
