Binghamton Police Charge Man with Attempted Murder

Bob Joseph/WNBF News [file][/caption]Binghamton police say a 20-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a West Side robbery during which shots were fired.

Authorities say Jayvel Hatcher of New York City has been charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree robbery and resisting arrest. Hatcher also faces counts of weapon possession and obstructing governmental administration.

Hatcher is suspected of robbing a 38-year-old man at gunpoint on Thorpe Street March 14.

Hatcher allegedly stole the man's coat, cellphone and money before walking to Mather Street.

The man who was robbed then drove to Mather Street in an effort to find Hatcher. Police say Hatcher then began shooting at the man, who was in a Nissan Pathfinder.

A police officer who heard the gun shots turned onto Mather Street and saw the vehicle that was targeted crash into a parked trailer.

The driver pointed out Hatcher to the officer. Hatcher then fled with another man.

The officer caught up with Hatcher on North Street. The suspect fought with the officer but he eventually was taken into custody with assistance from other officers.

Police say the items taken in the robbery were recovered from Hatcher.

Four spent .380 caliber shell casings were recovered at the shooting scene. Two partial projectiles were found inside the Pathfinder. Police were unable to find the gun.

Detectives say they are still trying to identify the man who fled with Hatcher after the shooting.
