Construction crews are working on the first of several levee repair projects planned this year in Broome County.

Workers from Procon Contracting of Endwell are excavating a section of an old floodwall just east of Mercereau Park in the Union District of Endicott.

The construction site is located behind an 18-unit apartment complex on River Terrace.

The project is being done under a contract with the New York State Office of General Services for work overseen by the Department of Environmental Conservation.

Deteriorated 18-inch pipeline that runs under the levee is being replaced. The work began Monday. It's expected to be completed in about three weeks.

Similar projects are planned later this summer in Johnson City, Lisle and other parts of the county.
