A drunken driver has been blamed for knocking down a recently-planted tree and some decorative features installed as part of downtown Binghamton's Court Street Gateway Project.

The crash happened in front of the Security Mutual Building on Exchange Street, just south of Court Street.

A city official said the allegedly intoxicated motorist was apprehended by city police after the weekend crash.

The driver is expected to be billed for the cost of making repairs to the traffic island.

The landscaping at the intersection had been installed over the past few weeks as part of the $2.7 million dollar Court Street improvement project.
