The Saint James Peace and Justice Committee is again offering a swap of groceries for guns.

The group will be taking the firearms at the Main Street, Johnson City Church Rectory Parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon May 10.

A Broome County Sheriff’s Deputy will be overseeing the swap and will check to make sure the firearms have not been reported stolen.

The Committee will give those dropping off guns to be destroyed 50 dollar grocery gift cards for working handguns or shotguns.   Working assault rifles can be exchanged for a 100 dollar grocery card.

Organizers reported 57 guns, including a couple assault rifles, were collected last year.

The exchange is done anonymously.

This is the fifth time the committee has offered the swap.

Anyone wanting to get rid of an unwanted firearm to be destroyed but miss the May 10th exchange may take unloaded weapons to the Broome County Public Safety Facility on Sgt. VanWinkle Drive behind SUNY Broome Community College off Upper Front Street in the Town of Dickinson during regular business hours.
