U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York are announcing federal funds for making Broome County homes safer.

The Democrats said August 24 over $2.9 million is coming from the Lead Hazard Control fund with $3,000 from Healthy Homes supplemental funding.

The Broome County Health Department will administer the grants for projects to remediate homes contaminated by lead.

EPA contractors will be hired and the federal funding will help defray up to $10,000 in the cost to owners for interior and exterior lead removal.

Up to 155 homes of low-income families or tenants with young children are targeted.

The Healthy Homes supplemental funding identifies hazards other than lead like broken stairs.
