A Whitney Point woman is admitting she stole thousands of dollars while serving as treasurer for the Glen Aubrey Fire Department in order to address her personal financial problems.

58 year old Terry Gow admitted taking about $58,000 from the fire company between December of 2008 and the end of December, 2013.

She entered a guilty plea to felony grand larceny in Broome County Court.

Sentencing is set for September.

Gow said she made unauthorized withdrawals from the fire department bank account over the five year period while she was treasurer.

Gow became treasurer one year before funds started to go missing.

Judge Martin Smith told Gow that if she doesn’t pay the fire department back, she could face up to seven years in jail.

The fire company found out about the missing money in January when M&T Bank notified them that their accounts were empty.

Officials with the fire department say the company is in serious financial trouble because of the loss of the embezzled funds.

The fire department is trying to raise money through barbeques and other events.

A barbeque and rummage sale fundraiser is scheduled for June 21.
