A well-known retired Delaware County diary farmer and former Delhi Fire Chief is being remembered for his service to the community after being found dead under a tree on his property off County Route 14 in Delhi February 25.

70 year old Ralph Hunt was found on the wooded property under the tree with his chainsaw and tractor still running nearby.

Hunt’s wife called the Delhi Fire Department when her husband did not return home for lunch after spending the morning gathering firewood.

Fire Department members trekked through deep, unplowed snow, following a farm tractor track to the top of the wooded property where they found Hunt pinned under a tree and unresponsive.

Investigators say Hunt was alone in the woods when he was hit and killed by the tree he was felling for firewood.

Hunt had been a volunteer firefighter in Delhi since 1982 and was still active. He was Chief from 1989 to 1990 and was honored as Firefighter of the year in 1987.
