Pieces of the crumbling pedestrian bridge at the State Street ramp had been falling to the pavement and onto a sidewalk for more than a year.

City public works crews had repeatedly cleaned up debris from the rusting section of the walkway in recent months.

Barricades were occasionally set up to protect people walking or driving through the area.

The pedestrian bridge ran from the parking garage to the building that housed the Bar 607 nightclub. It connected to a longer bridge that crosses State Street to the Metro Center.

Some people had ignored a sign warning against using the damaged walkway.

Binghamton Mayor Richard David said an emergency contract was approved to remove a short portion of the bridge.

Gorick Construction of Binghamton was paid $10,440 for the work, which was done on Tuesday.

City officials have not determined whether the longer walkway over State Street also will be removed.
