Operations are winding down at two Weis Markets stores in Broome County.

In May, the Pennsylvania-based supermarket chain announced plans to close stores on Main Street on Binghamton’s West Side and on Harry L Drive in Johnson City.

The company said the stores were “underperforming.” Weis is continuing to operate eight other stores in the Binghamton area.

The closing stores offered initial price discounts of 25 percent on most items. When the discount jumped to 50 percent, shoppers snapped up virtually all of the inventory at each location.

Weis said the company had employed 79 full- and part-time workers at the two stores. A Weis spokesman said the employees had been offered jobs at other local stores.

Weis Markets acquired the Broome County supermarkets in 2009 from Binghamton Giant Markets, owned by members of the Akel family.

The family opened its first supermarket on Court Street in Binghamton in 1933.
