Some Binghamton University faculty members, staff and students are expressing support for a Vestal group that's opposed to fracking in the town.

Vestal Residents for Safe Energy co-founder Sue Rapp says a letter signed by more than fifty university faculty members will be read at tonight's town board meeting.

The letter calls on board members to approve a moratorium on gas drilling in Vestal.

Rapp says the economics of gas drilling and how it could affect the university community and the town will be discussed in this evening's presentation at Vestal Town Hall.

A statement released by the citizens' group quotes one university associate professor as fracking would undermine "long-term economic stability for short-term gain."
