A Broome County legislator says the Sheriff’s Office and Health Department should develop a database that shows all known meth lab activity in the county.

Democrat Jason Garnar says he’s noticed an increase in reports of methamphetamine manufacturing operations uncovered in the area recently.

He says residents should be aware of the residual toxic dangers at properties once meth labs are shut down.

The 14th district legislator points to an online meth lab registry in Summit County, Ohio, which lists close to 900 meth labs.  Garner says the federal Drug Enforcement Administration’s database often contains incomplete lists of known labs while Summit County’s appears to be more accurate and up-to-date.

Garnar says lingering chemicals at a site where methamphetamine has been manufactured can cause everything from dry mouth and headaches to breathing problems even after a property has supposedly been cleaned.

Garnar says there are no national standards regarding the clean up of meth labs or acceptable levels of exposure.
