The Broome County District Attorney has released an unusual statement regarding questions surrounding possible probes into actions by elected officials and law enforcement officers.

The statement by Stephen Cornwell was issued shortly after 3 p.m. Friday.

In response to numerous requests for comment from the media and members of the public regarding elected officials and law enforcement officers, it would be unethical for this office to comment on whether or not there is a potential investigation.

If I felt this office had a conflict with any investigation, it would be referred to the 6th Judicial District Administrative Judge to assign another District Attorney's Office outside our region to conduct without conflict.

My message to Broome County has always been: if you've done nothing wrong -- you have nothing to worry about.

Our office will have no further comment on this issue.

In recent days, there has been growing speculation and discussion about investigations focusing on current and former Broome County elected officials and police agency employees.
