The Binghamton Zoo has welcomed three new additions.  Born on March 1 were North American  river otter triplets !  The pups were born to parents Elaine and Leroy.  The otters are born with fur and are nursed and cared for by their mother.

The new baby otters will remain  at the Binghamton Zoo into autumn.  At that time there will be a decision on whether they stay in Binghamton or move to another zoo to breed and produce more of their species.  North American river otters are located in Canada and much of the United States.

The life expectancy  of North American river otters is 10-15 years in the wild and 15-20 years in captivity.  At birth they weighed between 180 grams and 232 grams.  Officials at the Binghamton Zoo will hold a contest to name the new triplets.
