Bob Joseph/WNBF News [file][/caption]The city of Binghamton water department is advising residents to take steps to reduce the likelihood of frozen water lines.

According to City Hall, water department crews have been working to thaw out frozen service lines and repair water main breaks.

Private contractors also have been brought in to help repair broken water lines.

City officials are urging home and business owners to try prevent pipes from freezing.

Among the tips: Keep garage doors closed if water supply lines are located in a garage.

Also, kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors should be kept open to allow warmer air to circulate around pipes.

Allowing cold water to drip from a faucet served by exposed pipes can help prevent pipes from freezing.

Residents who will be away during cold weather periods should be sure heat is maintained. Temperatures should be set no lower than 55 degrees.

More information about prevent and thawing frozen pipes is available online from the American Red Cross.
