The Broome County Sheriff's Office responded to a crash involving several vehicles on the Interstate 88 West - Interstate 81 overpass on Wednesday morning (11/15/2023) that led to the closure of Interstate 88 westbound near Exit 2 for several hours.

Around 7:51 a.m. on Wednesday, Broome County Sheriff's Deputies arrived at the scene of the accident on the Interstate 88 West - Interstate 81 overpass located in the Town of Chenango, Broome County. Upon arriving, the deputies observed the crash had involved a total of six vehicles.

According to the Broome County Sheriff's Office, a motorist driving a 2001 Dodge pickup truck was westbound on the Interstate 88 overpass when the vehicle hit a patch of ice and flipped onto its hood.

Another vehicle (vehicle 2) that was traveling in the same direction behind the pickup truck was successful in stopping without colliding with the Dodge pickup truck. But, four other vehicles who were traveling in the same direction, did not stop in time to avoid a collision.

All four vehicles hit the ice patch and collided with the 2nd vehicle along with each other. The Broome County Sheriff's Office notes that two motorists were transported to Wilson and Lourdes hospitals for minor injuries.

The cause of the accident according to the Broome County Sheriff's Office was due to ice caused by a parked construction site water truck that was leaking water onto the highway. As of the time of the sheriff's filed report, no charges had been filed.
