The pavement on most of Clinton Street in Binghamton's First Ward is being sealed in a process known as "microsurfacing."

The project began on Monday, with crews starting at the Oak Street intersection. Drivers may encounter some delays because traffic will be restricted to a single lane in the work zone.

The microsurfacing work is moving west on Clinton Street to the Glenwood Avenue intersection.

Mayor Richard David said the work is "part of a preventative maintenance strategy" aimed at extending the useful life of some of the city's busiest roadways.

David said the process should result in the city resorting to costly milling and paving efforts less frequently.

David indicated the city will utilize the microsurfacing technique on other streets in the future.
