Following a two-year application process, the Binghamton Police Department Metro SWAT Team is now one of only five SWAT teams in the state to be certified by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services.

Officers participated in a four-week SWAT school, advanced sniper school and incident command school.

The Binghamton Police Department coordinates the Metro SWAT team that is made up of 10 officers from Binghamton, Johnson City and Vestal Police Departments.

Last year, the City secured a grant from the U-S Department of Homeland Security’s Tactical Team Grant Program for $99,929 to fund a radio system and some training.

Earlier this month Mayor Richard David announced a separate $99,300 grant from the Program to pay for additional equipment upgrades and training.
