According to police, 57-year-old Elvin Hernandez was taken into custody by patrol officers at the scene. Hernandez has been charged with second-degree attempted murder.

Investigators say they believe Hernandez used a sharp knife-type object to repeatedly stab and slash the woman. She sustained lacerations to her head, face and limbs.

Police say Hernandez also lives in the Isbell Street building.

Detectives say people in the building had heard noise coming from the woman's apartment. They were unsure what prompted the dispute.
