Members of the commission that looks into fair treatment of all residents living, visiting and doing business in the City of Binghamton are now appointed at the discretion of the Mayor.

Binghamton City Council has approved Mayor Richard David’s resolution changing the appointment process of the Binghamton Human Rights Commission from a board-driven method to appointments from his office.

The sole dissenting vote was by Democrat Conrad Taylor.

Following the movement of the legislation, Citizen Action of New York said the six sitting voting members of the commission have refused possible reappointment by the Mayor, which, along with keeping the number of commissioners at seven, was included in a compromise from the original legislation.

Under the change, the Mayor appoints commission members, subject to confirmation by Binghamton City Council.
