An annual Broome County biking event won't be held this year because of sponsorship and staffing issues.

The Binghamton Bridge Pedal has been held every July since 2006. But the Binghamton Metropolitan Transportation Study, which has coordinated the event, says it's been canceled.

About 150 people participated in last year's ride. The event was a police-escorted bike tour around downtown Binghamton and the city's river corridor areas.

Higher insurance costs and the loss of a sponsor prompted the decision to scrap this year's Bridge Pedal.

In its announcement, BMTS indicated the event could return next year. Volunteers and sponsors will be needed to organize the Bridge Pedal, if it's going to return.
