New York State Police say a Rhode Island man is dead following a chain-reaction crash in Windsor that started when a black bear walked onto Interstate 86/ Route 17.

According to authorities, 56 year old Thomas Poole of Woonsocket was riding a motorcycle that was the third vehicle involved in the crash at around 9:40 p.m. July 24 and died at Wilson Hospital.

Troopers say a Jeep Cherokee driven by Clay Monroe of Bronxsville, New York hit the bear in the westbound lanes, killing it.

Judy Bogad of Ardmore, Pennsylvania swerved, hit the dead bear and Poole's motorcycle.

Poole was ejected from the bike and pronounced dead at the hospital.

Bogad suffered a minor arm injury.

The investigation is continuing.
