The Broome County District Attorney says 22 year old Orlando Tercero is now formally charged with murder in the death of fellow Binghamton University Nursing School student 22 year old Haley Anderson of Long Island and an arrest warrant has been issued.

D.A. Stephen Cornwell says the information about the case is being turned over to the federal government to work through diplomatic toward Tercero’s extradition from Nicaragua where he fled after Anderson was strangled to death.

In a news conference Saturday, Cornwell said some of the Long Island woman’s friends found Anderson unresponsive in Tercero’s Oak Street apartment March 9th when they went to check on her welfare.

Investigators said that Tercero and Anderson had, at least at one time, been involved in a relationship, but there have been no other details given about a possible motive or events leading up to the killing.

Police in Nicaragua took Tercero into custody March 13th at a hospital where he was being treated for apparent self-inflicted injuries.
