An abandoned apartment house on Court Street in Binghamton has sustained heavy water damage.

The twelve-unit building at 212 Court Street apparently has been vacant for an extended period.

A city fire department duty chief said a caretaker discovered the basement of the apartment house was filled with water. The damage was reported early this afternoon.

The duty chief said a notice posted on the front of the building by the Broome County Health Department was undated.

The notice warned of lead hazards that had been identified in five of the building's apartments.

Real estate records indicate the property has been owned by a Brooklyn company.

City officials say several residential and commercial buildings have been damaged by ruptured water lines in recent weeks because of insufficient heat.
