Binghamton Zoo’s Adult Red Panda Dies
Xiao-Li, a five-year-old red panda at the Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park, has died.
Zoo officials say they don't know what caused Xiao-Li's death. The animal was taken to Cornell University Wednesday for a necropsy.
Xiao-Li had been at the Binghamton zoo since December 2011. He was brought to the zoo to pair up with its female red panda, Mei-Li.
Officials say Xiao-Li displayed symptoms of lymphoma in 2012 and seemed to have made a full recovery.
The zoo had planned to announce this morning the relocation of its baby red panda, Zhin-Li, to Erie, Pennsylvania, as part of a species survival program overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Zhin-Li was born at the Binghamton zoo nearly seven months ago. He's expected to be matched with another red panda at the Erie Zoo.
Zhin-Li's move has been delayed in the aftermath of his father's death.
