Wrong Way Driver Stopped on I81 Near Castle Creek
No injuries are reported as an elderly driver was stopped early December 7 after being seen going the wrong way on Interstate 81 in Cortland and Northern Broome County.
The man, driving a new Lincoln with New Jersey plates, was seen by other drivers going at a high rate of speed southbound in the northbound lanes of the Interstate, crossing into Broome County from Cortland County shortly before 3 a.m.
Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies scrambled to respond to the scene as, within minutes, the driver was speeding past the Whitney Point rest area.
The man finally stopped for authorities on Exit 7 in Castle Creek at around 3:05 a.m. as deputies were preparing to deploy stop sticks a little further South on the highway.
Authorities say the driver appeared confused but was otherwise unhurt. No other vehicles were involved.
The investigation is continuing.
