Winter Weather Complicates Travel and School Plans

The National Weather Service continued the Weather Advisory for the much of the Twin Tiers and Central New York until 9 a.m. January 17 but the Advisory was replaced by a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Tioga County in the 6 a.m. hour.

Road crews were out all night and morning but emergency services officials said the roads, while passable, were snow-covered, especially in higher elevations, side streets and outlying areas and could be expected to remain that way with a potential for icing with the temperatures dropping from the 20s overnight to the teens on January 17 during the day and the single digits for the night.

Dozens of schools in the region opted to delay a couple hours to allow road crews to treat the roads but still, motorists should be aware of slippery conditions and possible reduced visibility and slow down.
