A rapidly-expanding national restaurant chain is preparing to open its first location in the Binghamton area.

Site preparation is underway for a Qdoba Mexican Eats restaurant on the Vestal Parkway.

Vestal town supervisor John Schaffer said he expects the new business may open by the end of the year, although he had not heard a specific target date for the start of operations.

The restaurant building is to be constructed at 2512 Vestal Parkway East. The Beck Group of Binghamton received permission from the town planning board about a year ago to proceed with the project.

The plans call for a 2,100-square-foot fast food restaurant with a drive-thru lane east of Evergreen Street. The entrance would be near a Metro Mattress store and the exit is to be located near a Hertz car rental store.

Qdoba officials have said the chain plans to open 40 new restaurants this year and 60 more next year. According to a news release, the company "expects to double in size over the next decade."

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.

Read on to explore the cost of gas over time and rediscover just how much a gallon was when you first started driving.
