Work is moving forward on the development of a massive housing project in the town of Vestal.

Crews began clearing the 43-acre site between Bunn Hill and Jensen roads began one year ago and construction operations started last October.

A Georgia company - Landmark Properties - battled local opponents of the project for several years before receiving approval to build the project, which is located less than a mile south of the Binghamton University campus.

Excavation activity is continuing at the site. On Thursday, large dump trucks continued delivering more material before construction starts on the 161 "cottage-style" units.

A Landmark Construction representative in Vestal was not authorized to discuss the project with a reporter. The developers have not been available for comment.

The land where the student housing is being built was owned by the Kradjian family.

A sign at the site indicates cottages with two to five bedrooms will be available. Landmark Properties has indicated people will be able to choose from "15 unique floor plans."

The complex is to include a 12,000-square-foot clubhouse and a heated outdoor pool. It will have a total of 700 beds and 554 parking spaces.

The Vestal project will be the third housing development for Landmark Properties in New York state. The company currently has a complex in Buffalo and is planning to open one in Syracuse late next year.
