UN Nuclear Weapons Ban Celebrated at Binghamton Federal Building

A group of peace activists gathered in downtown Binghamton to cheer a United Nations treaty banning nuclear weapons.

The celebration outside the federal building on Henry Street at midday Friday was held as the historic agreement entered force.

Nations known to have nuclear weapons, including the United States, Russia and China don't support the ban.

Several countries have ratified the treaty. Many of those who attended the Binghamton event carried signs with messages expressing opposition to nuclear weapons.

The bells at the nearby Christ Episcopal Church rang as speakers called for the world's nuclear powers to support the initiative.

Participants then marched around the federal building as musicians played New Orleans-style tunes.

The event was sponsored by the Broome County Nuclear Reduction Committee and Veterans for Peace.
