UHS Celebrates Completion of Johnson City Child Care Center

An abandoned Aldi grocery store in the town of Union has been turned into a modern child care and educational facility.

United Health Services administrators and employees were joined by elected officials for a celebration Thursday at the center on Main Street in Westover.

The facility is located a short distance west of UHS Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

Aldi had occupied the building for almost a quarter-century before the company opened a larger store on Harry L. Drive in October 2020.

The soon-to-open 18,000-square-foot facility will accommodate up to 82 children. Various programs will be offered for infant, toddler, preschool and kindergarten prep-aged kids.

The center will operate from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays year-round with full-time and part-time options.

UHS is partnering with Massachusetts-based Bright Horizons, a company which operates employer-sponsored child care programs in the United States and other countries.

The center could open in the next few weeks. The opening date is contingent on the granting of an operating license by state regulators.
