Two women died and a man was critically injured as the result of a two-car crash near Ithaca.

Authorities say a southbound 2010 Honda CR-V veered into the opposite lane on Route 13 in the town of Newfield just after 3:30 Wednesday afternoon.

The vehicle collided with a northbound 1997 Lexus sedan.

State police say the driver of the Honda, 56-year-old Pamela Klemme of Syracuse, was pronounced dead at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca.

Troopers say a passenger in the Lexus, 87-year-old Ruth Schwartz of Ithaca, also was pronounced dead at Cayuga Medical Center.

Investigators say 83-year-old Seymour Smidt of Ithaca, who was driving the Lexus, was treated for internal injuries at Cayuga Medical Center. He then was taken to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, where he was reported to be in critical condition.

State police say the crash investigation is continuing.
