Transformation Underway at Abandoned Binghamton Power Plant
A project to develop a manufacturing facility at a former cogeneration plant in Binghamton is moving forward.
Firomar New York has received approval from the city planning commission to construct an addition to the existing structure at 22 Charles Street in the city's First Ward.
Project manager Paolo Maccabrunni said the new facility will make products for the construction industry. He said the company has the technology to manufacture large energy-efficient panels for use with existing and new buildings.
Maccabrunni said Firomar now has equipment in Connecticut that will be moved to Binghamton for the future manufacturing plant.
The city planning commission last month held a public hearing on the company's proposal to convert the former electricity generating facility.
A man who lives near the site said he had hope the property would be used to provide energy in the future for city residents.
The California company that had owned the plant removed gas-fired turbine that was used by the generating plant in 2018. After the expensive equipment was stripped from the facility, the company turned the property over to the city.
The planning commission approved the project after the brief public hearing.
Maccabrunni told the planning commission he believes initial production at the Charles Street site could start sometime in November.
