The tractor trailer tipped onto its side at around 5:10 a.m. April 23 right at the Interstate 81 North bridge to Route 17 West in the Prospect Mountain construction zone.

Officials quickly called for the New York State Department of Transportation to take steps to divert traffic, which was said to have quickly started backing up at the 17/81 interchange.

City of Binghamton Police on the scene were working to keep some traffic moving through one lane until detours could be set up and traffic down to the Brandywine Highway was also being impacted to some extent.

It's not known what caused the tractor trailer to tip over or when the road might reopen.  As of 6 a.m. City Police said a tow company was on the scene but it was not known what the tractor trailer was hauling or how long it might take to get it cleaned up.  Witnesses said it appeared that the truck may have some sort of recyclables on board but debris was not widely scattered on the road.
